Every ArtfullyNew made-to-order gift or collectible is unique. Artist Elaine Hogg is inspired by her client's story, the event or celebration.
Each new piece or project begins with a find: a door, wooden window frame, a picture frame - new or old, wooden furniture, boxes, items such as a milk jug or cutting board. For her murals, she needs a surface such as a wall, cabinetry, a fence or door.
Once the wood piece is decided on, Elaine coats it with stain or paint. "I like a lot of visual texture so often do some kind of faux finish," she says.
"I then apply the paper. I sand a lot between steps and distress with ink to get the right look." Next come the embellishments or charms. "When I am happy with the look I varnish."
Elaine likes to get a sense of the person for whom she is commissioned to make the piece. For example, favourite colours, hobbies and interests. Some customers chose the paper, box and embellishments.
